To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to his answer of 10 May,Official Report, column 457 (1) if he will make it his policy to ensure that the public expenditure cover he will make available to the British Railways Board in regard to the contractual and other obligations of the board will be sufficient to cover all industrial injury claims brought by retired British Rail employees following privatisation of British Rail; [25028]

(2) whether the amount of public expenditure cover that will be made available by his Department to the British Railways Board in regard to the contractual and other obligations of the board will be financially limited. [25027]

In setting the annual level of public expenditure provision to support British Rail, the Government have regard to all aspects of the board's financial position, including any contractual obligations and any need to make payments arising from industrial injury claims awards.
