HC Deb 23 May 1995 vol 260 c568W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what new proposals he has to make road vehicle fronts more absorbent to the force of collision. [25428]

Mr. Norris

The United Kingdom has taken a leading role on pedestrian protection research for many years. We have in particular encouraged the preparation of a draft EU directive which would require car fronts to be designed with pedestrian accidents in mind and will continue to press the European Commission to bring forward a proposal without further delay.

Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will investigate the evidence on the safety value of the use of airbags on the front of cars in Japan. [25529]

Mr. Norris

No. Very little information is yet available on this system.

Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what research he has evaluated into the effects on driver and passenger on vehicles with bull bars when involved in accidents, listing the studies(a) conducted in the United Kingdom and (b) conducted overseas. [25425]

Mr. Norris

None. We are not aware of any relevant research.
