§ Mr. RichardsThe General Medical Council is the independent statutory authority responsible for regulating the medical profession. In the last two years the GMC has used its powers to suspend doctors in almost 50 per cent. of cases. Representations have been received on individual cases, but these are matters for the GMC, not the Government.
A Bill currently before Parliament would give the NHS tribunal new powers of suspension.
