HC Deb 23 May 1995 vol 260 cc551-2W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what measures he will take to ensure that general practitioners found guilty of professional misconduct do not continue to practise pending the outcome of their appeal; [24860]

(2) how many general practitioners found guilty of professional misconduct are continuing to practise pending their appeal; and if he will make a statement; [24839]

(3) what representations he has received concerning general practitioners who continue to practise pending their appeal; and if he will make a statement. [24859]

Mr. Richards

The General Medical Council is the independent statutory authority responsible for regulating the medical profession. In the last two years the GMC has used its powers to suspend doctors in almost 50 per cent. of cases. Representations have been received on individual cases, but these are matters for the GMC, not the Government.

A Bill currently before Parliament would give the NHS tribunal new powers of suspension.
