HC Deb 22 May 1995 vol 260 cc411-2W
Mr. Jim Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for Education (1) what funding has been provided by her Department to the Foundation for Conductive Education in the past; and what are her future plans for funding in the United Kingdom; [24818]

(2) what representations she has received regarding funding for the Foundation for Conductive Education in the United Kingdom. [24817]

Mr. Forth

The Department has not received any bids for funding from the Foundation for Conductive Education in the United Kingdom, and has not financed the foundation in the past.

The Department would consider any such representations, with other Government Departments, on their merits. But the statutory responsibility for special educational provision rests in the first instance with local education authorities, to be decided in the light of local needs and resources.

Mr. Jim Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for education what funding has been provided from her Department to the Peto Institute in Budapest; and how much funding has been provided over the last three years. [24819]

Mr. Forth

The Department for Education provided £600,000 in 1991, as part of an initial Government package totalling £1.75 million. No funding has been provided over the last three years.
