To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he is taking to make heavy goods vehicles safer. [22703]

There are already stringent controls regulating both the construction and use requirements of vehicles, which are continually being upgraded in line with technological improvements. Compliance with these requirements is checked at annual roadworthiness tests and enforcement spot checks both at the roadside and at operators' premises.

We also regulate vehicle maintenance through the operator licensing system and have a continuing programme of research directed at the development of new standards to help reduce the number and severity of accidents.
