To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is his latest estimate of the total cost in benefits to those registered as unemployed in Britain at the latest available date. [20144]

Mr. Roger Evans

The latest estimate of benefit expenditure on unemployed people for the year April 1994 to March 1995 is £9,100 million. The amount includes unemployment benefit, income support, housing benefit, council tax and social fund payments but not child benefit or family credit. This information is shown in table 5 of the Social Security Departmental Report, Cm. 2813, which is in the Library.
