To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what assessment he has made of the contribution which the private finance initiative could make to(a) infrastructure and (b) other projects by the end of the decade. [15291]

My right hon. and learned Friend announced in his Budget speech that contracts leading to £5 billion worth of capital investment are due to be signed in 1995 under the PFI. He announced a further £1 billion of projects in January. Much more will follow as PFI becomes the procurement route of choice.
