HC Deb 30 June 1995 vol 262 c815W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many private shopping visits were made by prison officers on behalf of prison inmates in England and Wales during the week of 12 June. [31101]

Mr. Michael Forsyth

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Brian Landers to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 30 June 1995: The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General, to reply to your recent Question about shopping trips by prison officers for prison inmates. No private shopping trips by prison officers were made during the week of 12 June. This is in line with the Home Secretary's announcement last December that the practice of prison officers going shopping at the behest of individual prisoners had stopped.
