HC Deb 22 June 1995 vol 262 c349W
Mrs. Beckett

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans she has to issue guidance on the minimum amount of sleep a junior doctor should have in a 24-hour period and in one week. [30254]

Mr. Malone

None.

We continue to make significant progress through the new deal on junior doctors' hours, copies of which are available in the Library, to reduce both contracted and actual hours of work.

The priority new deal target this year is to see that no junior doctor works more than 56 hours a week on average during their contracted duty period. Ensuring that juniors benefit from adequate rest periods means that this target can more easily be met.
