To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many asylum seekers are at present being held in prisons in England and Wales. [29545]

Mr. Nicholas Baker

As at 15 June 1995, a total of 240 persons who had at some stage sought asylum in the United Kingdom were detained in Prison Service establishments. This figure includes people awaiting the setting of directions for removal following refusal of the application, as well as those whose applications were under consideration or subject to appeal.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what proportion of asylum applications made by people with leave to enter the United Kingdom as visitors in 1994 was made before the leave to enter expired. [29461]
