Mr. William O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many deaths of children aged under 17 years were caused by asthma in each of the past five years. [29091]

Mr. Sackville

The following is the information deaths coded to Asthma (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, code 493) as underlying cause to children aged between 28 days1 and up to 16 years of age, England and Wales 1989–1993.

Numbers
Year Males Females Total
1989 21 11 32
1990 30 12 42
1991 26 14 40
1992 15 9 24
1993 11 11 22
1 For deaths at ages less than 28 days it is not possible to derive an underlying cause of death. However between 1989–93 there were no deaths under 28 days of age with an infant mention of Asthma.
