HC Deb 19 June 1995 vol 262 cc43-4W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many children had tuberculosis in each health authority area in England and Wales for each of the last three years for which figures are available; and if she will make a statement. [28714]

Mr. Sackville

The Office of Population, Censuses and Surveys receives reports of cases of tuberculosis notified to proper officers of local authorities. Information is not available on notified cases by district health authority. The approximate numbers of cases for regional health authorities are published in the series "MB2: Communicable Disease Statistics" and are placed in the Library. A table giving the number of reports of tuberculosis in children aged under 16 by local authority in England and Wales has been placed in the Library.

BCG immunisation to protect against tuberculosis is normally given to children between the ages of 10 and 14 but is recommended at birth for children born into high-risk families.
