To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will list her Department's projects aimed at promoting healthy eating indicating the cost of each project her Department. [26299]

The Government's nutrition task force published "Eat Well!", its programme of action for achieving the diet and nutrition targets of "The Health of the Nation", in March 1994, copies of which are available in the Library. Project teams are now taking forward the priorities of the programme and responsibility for the secretariat is shared by the Department of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

The programme involves a wide range of interests—Government Departments, food producers, caterers, retailers, educators, the Health Education Authority, the national health service, health professionals' and, consumers—whose costs cannot be identified separately and not all of which fall on the Government. Direct costs to the Government are small and are not identifiable. The Department of Health has contributed from the section 64 general scheme to the funding of the following projects to promote healthy eating in line with the diet and nutrition targets: *"Get Cooking!"—£60,000 over 1992–93 and 1993–94 to the National Food Alliance—which aims to encourage children to learn basic cooking skills; *"Shopping for A Healthy Diet on A Low Income"—£15,000 in 1993–94 to the National Food Alliance—which produced a resource for people working with low-income families; *"The Nutrition of Older People"—£10,000 in 1993–94 to the Caroline Walker Trust—which is aimed at producing nutritional guidelines for those providing food for older people.

This is complemented and underpinned by the Health Education Authority's nutrition programme-£500,000 in 1995–96.
