To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many(a) emergency calls to ambulance service, (b) admissions were made to casualty departments and (c) admissions were made to hospital from casualty in total and in each region in each of the last five years. [26316]

Information on the number of emergency calls to ambulance services is published annually in a booklet entitled "Patient Transport Services, Summary information from form KA34", copies of which are available in the Library. Since 1992–93, this has been recorded as the total number of emergency calls resulting in an ambulance arriving at the scene of an incident, that is, discounting abortive calls.

Information on the number of finished consultant episodes in the speciality of accident and emergency medicine is published annually in "Ordinary and day case admissions for England", copies of which are available in the Library.

Information on the estimated number of finished consultant episodes, emergency admissions from accident and emergency departments, England 1989–90 to 199394 is shown in the table:
