Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on trends in the incidence of asthma attacks in Shropshire and surrounding areas in the past five weeks; and what factors are considered to have affected them; and if he will make a statement. [35865]

Mr. Sackville

The hon. Member may wish to contact Councillor D. G. Lloyd, chairman of Shropshire health authority, for details.

Ms Lynne

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what comparative studies his Department has made of the effectiveness of prescribing methods adopted by(a) fundholding and (b) non-fundholding general practitioners for asthma patients; and if he will make a statement. [34441]

Mr. Malone

No comparative studies have been carried out. However, at October 1994, around 90 per cent. both of fundholding and of non-fundholding general practitioners were providing chronic disease management programmes for asthma and diabetes.
