HC Deb 18 July 1995 vol 263 c1128W
Mrs. Fyfe

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what estimate he has as to how much has been raised by fund-raising activities by schools in each education authority, in order to purchase basic classroom materials. [34488]

Mr. Raymond S. Robertson

No information is available centrally on which to base an estimate.

Mrs. Fyfe

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his policy in respect of schools engaging in fund—raising activities in order to purchase new reading books. [34489]

Mr. Robertson

Local authorities spend around £2.5 billion a year on education of which around £9 million is spent on text and library books for schools. Schools have for many years undertaken fund-raising activities to provide additional funding across a wide range of activities.
