HC Deb 18 July 1995 vol 263 c1081W
Mr. Jim Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what are her aims for(a) the West Midlands council for sport and recreation and (b) other regional sports councils. [34771]

Mr. Sproat

On 29 March, the then Secretary of State confirmed that the present linkage between the Sports Council and the regional councils for sport and recreation will come to an end from 1 January 1996. I hope that local authorities will set up their own machinery to co-ordinate their wider regional strategies.

Mr. Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what level of funding for the West Midlands council for sport and recreation is expected as a result of the implementation of proposals for the English Sports Council; and what is the current level. [34768]

Mr. Sproat

At present, the cost to the Sports Council of servicing the West Midlands regional council for sport and recreation is £18,500 per annum. Under our restructuring proposals, the linkage between the Sports Council and the RCSRs will cease.
