To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will list those companies providing advice on the privatisation of(a) the coal industry, (b) the electricity industry and (c) the gas industry and the total amounts paid to the date for the advice in each industry. [34643]

[holding answer 14 July 1995]: The answers are as follows:

(a) Coal

The advisers to the Department of Trade and Industry and the former Department of Energy on coal privatisation were listed in reply to a question from the hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent North (Ms Walley) on 21 July 1994, Official Report, columns 522–23.

Total net expenditure on coal privatisation advisers in 1991–1992 to 1993–1994 was £15.8 million. Provisional outturn in 1994–95 was £16.7 million and £4.3 million has been provided for 1995–96.

(b) Electricity

The advisers to the former Department of Energy on privatisation of the electricity supply industry in England and Wales were listed to a question in reply from the hon. member for Holborn and St. Pancras (Mr. Dobson) on 23 January 1992, Official Report, columns 281–84.

Total net expenditure on electricity privatisation advisers to the former Department of Energy was £51.5 million.

(c) Gas

The advisers to the former Department of Energy on gas privatisation were:

  • N.M. Rothschild
  • Cazenove
  • Slaughter and May
  • Touche Ross
  • Price Waterhouse
  • Engage Resource Consultants

The following bodies advised both the former Department of Energy and British Gas:

  • Goldman Sachs
  • Wood Gundy
  • Swiss Bank Corporation
  • Nomura
  • Dewe Rogerson
  • Young and Rubicam
