To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what was the proportionate change in the level of expenditure of the Department of Finance and Personnel between 1993–94 and 1994–95; and what factors led to this change. [34999]

Public expenditure by the Department of Finance and Personnel, on the basis of the latest available figures, increased by some 24 per cent. between 1993–94 and 1994–95. The increase is mainly attributable to increases in redundancy payments, around £7 million, and the buying out of future year liabilities for redundancy costs£6 million. Both these items are borne by DFP in relation to redundancies in Northern Ireland Departments and the Northern Office.
