Mr. McCartney

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many industrial tribunal cases were considered since 1979, by region; and how many resulted in a verdict of unfair dismissal. [32312]

Mr. Oppenheim

The number of industrial tribunal cases in all jurisdictions considered at a hearing, by region, since 1986 is shown in the table. The number of successful unfair dismissal cases is also shown.

Region (England andWales) Number of cases heard (1986–1995) Number of successful unfair dismissal cases
Bedford 8,282 2,284
Birmingham 10,920 2,593
Bristol 8,001 1,788
Cardiff 7,825 1,466
Leeds 13,227 3,204
London North 14,143 2,665
London South 14,237 3,374
Manchester 17,735 4,490
Newcastle 6,609 1,551
Nottingham 7,960 1,922
Southampton 9,633 2,376
Scotland 15,357 3,808

The raw data for individual regions are no longer available for 1985–86, but the aggregated figures for Great Britain for that year are as follows:

  • Number of cases heard: 13,357
  • Number of successful unfair dismissal cases: 3,229

Prior to 1985–86, the Department published selected statistics only, and then not on a regular annual basis.

Mr. Byers

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list for each training and enterprise council its budget for 1995–96. [31711]

Mr. Paice

The budgets of individual training and enterprise councils are treated as commercial in confidence between the Department and TECs until the autumn, while TECs complete their negotiations with providers of training.
