Ms Jowell

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to her answer of 28 November,Official Report, column 535, how many acute psychiatric beds are needed in London for average bed occupancy to be 85 per cent.

Mr. Bowis

It is for individual health authorities to assess the need for acute psychiatric beds and to contract with providers of mental health services to ensure that sufficient beds are available to meet the needs of their resident population. Average bed occupancy rates can be agreed as part of the contracting process and will relate to local circumstances. I refer the hon. Member to the reply that I gave her on 28 November 1994, column535 for specific action being taken in inner London.
