asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, as reported, the British Ambassador in Rangoon is intending to organise another British trade fair this spring and whether this is appropriate given the recent military offensives by the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) regime against the Karen people.

The British Week in Rangoon (27 February to 3 March) is a small scale affair, aimedinter alia, at giving British companies the chance to judge for themselves market opportunities in Burma. It is not a trade fair.

We do not consider our policy of limited help to British companies with an interest in Burma to be inconsistent with the political message we continue to press home to the SLORC.
