HC Deb 18 December 1995 vol 268 c904W
Mr. Robert McCartney

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what review has been undertaken by the Fair Employment Commission or its predecessor of the exception contained in section 37(1)(c) of the Fair Employment Act 1976 relating to the employment of teachers in schools, as required in that Act. [5433]

Sir John Wheeler

The exception relating to the employment of teachers in schools was reviewed by the Fair Employment Agency in 1981 and 1987. No changes to the exception were recommended.

Mr. Robert McCartney

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will ask the Fair Employment Commission to report to him upon the exercise of its functions under section 38 of the Fair Employment Act 1976 with recommendations on action which might be taken to further equality of opportunity in the employment of teachers or on removing the exception of teachers in schools from the fair employment laws. [5454]

Mr. Ancram

It is not my right hon. and learned Friend's intention, at the present time, to ask the Fair Employment Commission to undertake such an exercise.
