HC Deb 18 December 1995 vol 268 c935W
Sir Irvine Patnick

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much money is expected to be raised by the sale or development of Middlewood hospital, Sheffield; and how much of this will be directed to the development of mental health services in Sheffield. [5772]

Mr. Horam

The Community Health Sheffield national health service trust has not yet determined its, property requirements on the site so the amount of proceeds from any forthcoming sale cannot be determined.

The authority has invested significantly more money in mental health services in Sheffield than the sale proceeds expected from Middlewood hospital.

Sir Irvine Patnick

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how long Fulwood hospital, Sheffield has been closed; what progress has been made on selling or redeveloping the site; what its intended future use is; and how much of any money raised will be directed into Sheffield health services. [5774]

Mr. Horam

Although Fulwood hospital was closed to patients in the early 1980s, it has continued to be used for alternative health care provision until January 1995, when the building was declared surplus to national health service requirements.

Agents and planning consultants are appointed to progress the planning potential and the subsequent sale of the site. It is expected that the site will be marketed early in 1996.

Significantly more investment has been directed into health care services than the expected sale proceeds from surplus sites. Future investment will be determined by the competing priorities and the funds available at the time.
