HC Deb 04 December 1995 vol 268 c61W
Mr. Chidgey

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the total number of(a vehicle and (b) passenger miles travelled by (i) motor car, (ii) omnibus and (iii) private coach in each of the last 10 years.

Mr. Norris

Passenger and vehicle miles by vehicle type and year are given in the table. Figures for buses and coaches are available only as a single combined category. However, further information on the use of buses run by public service vehicle operators can be obtained in section 5 of "Transport Statistics Great Britain" 1995 edition, a copy of which can be found in the Library. 1. Estimates are derived from the traffic series (vehicle miles) and average occupancy rates from the National Travel Survey.

2. Changes are estimated by deflating passenger receipts by the most appropriate price indices available. Because the proxy method has to be used the series gives only a broad guide to trends.
