HC Deb 25 April 1995 vol 258 cc433-4W
Mr. Sedgemore

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the number of police complaints, or cases of complaint, in each of the last five years for which figures are available which led to police officers being charged with(a) a criminal offence, or, if the information is held or recorded in a suitable form, (b) a non—traffic criminal offence, and (c) a traffic offence, and in each caste, the number of police officers convicted. [20033]

Mr. Maclean

The information on complaints resulting in criminal proceedings, for England and Wales, excluding the Metropolitan police, is shown in the table. Information held centrally does not show the number of convictions resulting from complaints.

Number of substantiated complaints by type of criminal proceedings
1989 1990 1991 1992 1993
Traffic offences 5 0 4 0 4
Other criminal offences 15 27 8 7 21
Total complaints resulting in proceedings 20 27 12 7 123
1Two complaints resulted in proceedings for both traffic and other criminal offences.

Mr. Sedgemore

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the total number of police officers in England and Wales, including the Metropolitan police, against whom disciplinary charges were brought in each of the last six years for which figures are available showing(a) in the case of discipline charges arising out of a complaint from a member of the public (i) the number of officers charged and (ii) the number of officers against whom charges were proved, (b) in the case of discipline charges arising out of other circumstances (i) the number of officers charged, (ii) the number of officers against whom charges were proved and (c) the total of (a) and (b) (i) charged and (ii) proved.[20034]

Mr. Maclean

The information requested is set out in the table, with the exception of figures for the Metropolitan police, which were not collected centrally before 1993. Revised collection criteria introduced from 1993 also mean that figures for the number of disciplinary charges arising in circumstances other than from a compliant are no longer available centrally.
