HC Deb 25 April 1995 vol 258 c421W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action is being taken by Her Majesty's Government and by the international community to alleviate drought in Botswana. [20252]

Mr. Baldry

No formal appeal for assistance has been made by the Government of Botswana, but we have had discussions on the drought with them, and other donors, and are ready to consider a request for assistance. There is unlikely to be a need for food aid as Botswana, in a non-drought year, already imports some 90 per cent. of its food requirements. It is therefore likely that any UK assistance will focus on technical and logistical support for food distribution to vulnerable communities.
