§ Mr. SweeneyTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales when he intends to publish the full programme of action to raise the achievement of pupils in schools in Wales promised in "People and Prosperity: An Agenda for Action in Wales". [19244]
§ Mr. RedwoodI intend to publish this document on Thursday 6 April. The text is entitled "A Bright Future: Getting the Best for Every Pupil at School in Wales". Among other things, it follows-up material in "People and Prosperity: An Agenda for Action in Wales". Taken as a whole, this initiative will be directly relevant to primary and secondary schools. It includes a consultation on a specific target for attainment in the core subjects of the national curriculum. The proposal is that, by 2000, at least half of all individual 15–year-olds should get an A to C grade in each of GCSE mathematics, science, English or Welsh, first language. Responses are sought by the end of June and the final target will be published in the autumn.
