Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the secretary of State for Scotland how many non-attenders to out-patient appointments there were in 1994; and what was the cost to the NHS. [17704]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The provisional figure for new out-patient appointments where the patient failed to attend in 1994 is 134,207. Corresponding information for return out-patients, and information on the resultant cost to the NHS of non-attenders is not centrally available.
