Mr. Winnick

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have been held and questioned by the authorities over the murder of Mr. Tarsend Singh Purewal. [18698]

Mr. Maclean

Seven suspects were arrested on 29 and 30 March. Following questioning, six of these have been released on police bail and a seventh has been served with a deportation order. Two other suspects were arrested on 24 January and released shortly afterwards.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many of those held and questioned by the authorities over the murder of Mr. Tarsend Singh Purewal were(a) United Kingdom citizens and (b) Indian citizens lawfully resident in the United Kingdom; and how many of those are now subject to deportation. Four were British citizens and three were Indian nationals, against one of whom deportation action is being taken.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects charges to be brought in the case of the murder of Mr. Tarsend Singh Purewal; and if he will make a statement. [18711]

Mr. Maclean

A major police investigation into the murder of Mr. Tarsend Singh Purewal is continuing. The bringing of charges is a matter for the police in the light of that investigation.
