To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will provide a regional and national breakdown of the sums of money recovered by the compensation recovery unit accompanied by a breakdown of the distribution of amounts of money recovered. [17812]

This is a matter for Mr. Michael Bichard, the chief executive of the Benefits Agency. He will write to the hon. Member with such information as is available.

Letter from Michael Bichard to Mr. Tony Worthington, dated 5 April 1995: The Secretary of State for Social Security has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question asking for a breakdown of the sums of money recovered and distributed by the Compensation Recovery Unit. Information relating to regions could be provided only at a disproportionate cost. I have provided, at Annex A, a national breakdown by benefit of the monies recovered and allocated in respect of the various benefits during the 1994/95 financial year. Statistics for the 1994–95 year will be placed in the Library today. Thereafter, statistics collated on a quarterly basis will be placed in the Library regularly.
