To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what estimate he has made of the grant available from the Sports Council and other public bodies in support for canoeing in the year 1993–94, expressed in terms per capita of those participating in this sport; and what are the corresponding figures for the sport of angling. In 1993–94, canoeing governing bodies received grants of £542,266 from the Sports Council, a sum of £5.42 on a per capita basis for the 100,000 people who take part in the sport. A further £16,875 was also provided in awards from Sportsmatch, a business sponsorship incentive scheme for sport launched by the Government in 1992 to increase the amount of business sponsorship going into grass roots sport and physical recreation. In 1993–94, Sports Council grants to the governing bodies of angling was £74,415, a sum of 2.8p on a per capita basis for the 2.7 million adults actively participating in the sport. In addition to this, £4,211.10 was provided in Sportswatch awards.
