HC Deb 04 April 1995 vol 257 c1003W
Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what plans he has to introduce a statutory regime for dealing with complaints against the press; and if he will make a statement. [17257]

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 3 April 1995]: The Government believe that self-regulation is preferable to a statutory regime for dealing with complaints against the press. We look to the newspaper industry and the Press Complaints Commission to vindicate their claim that self-regulation can be made effective. We will announce our conclusions in our response to the report of the National Heritage Select Committee on privacy and media intrusion.
