Ms Janet Anderson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what was the number of crimes committed in each year since 1989(a) in total and (b) as a percentage of crime recorded for each of those years; [17226]

(2) how many of the offences estimated by his Department to have been committed in 1993 were recorded. [17227]

Mr. Maclean

Information on crimes committed can be obtained from the British crime survey—BCS—but only for the years 1981, 1983, 1987, 1991 and 1993. A comparison of BCS figures of offences committed in these years with statistics of crimes recorded by the police, can be made only for offences against individuals and their property. These figures are contained in the table:

Comparison of British Crime Survey and notifiable offences recorded by the police

1981 6,538 1,466 22
