Mr. Donohoe

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what guidelines have been issued to health boards concerning the monitoring of standards within nursing homes.

The Scottish Office issued four sets of model guidelines between October 1989 and December 1993 covering the needs of specific client groups. The model guidelines and date of publication, are listed and copies have been placed in the Library of the HouseModel Guidelines for the Registration and Inspection of Nursing Homes for the Elderly (October 1989) Model Guidelines for the Registration and Inspection of Independent Hospitals and Nursing Homes Providing Acute Services (March 1992) Model Guidelines for the Registration and Inspection of Nursing Homes Providing Care and Treatment for People With a Learning Disability (December 1993) Model Guidelines for the Registration and Inspection of Nursing Homes Providing Continuing Care and Treatment for People with Dementia (December 1993).

In addition to the above sets of model guidelines, a document setting out national standards for the registration and inspection of nursing homes in Scotland is currently being produced for publication next year.
