HL Deb 24 October 1994 vol 558 c21WA
Lord Lester of Herne Hill

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which states have ratified the European Convention on the Legal Status of Migrant Workers 1983.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Baroness Blatch)

France, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Turkey.

Lord Lester of Herne Hill

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will ratify the European Convention on the Legal Status of Migrant Workers 1983; and, if not, why not.

Baroness Blatch

No. The convention goes beyond our existing international commitments on access to labour markets and what we think is necessary to secure the interests of migrants working here; and would be incompatible in several respects with the provisions of the immigration rules.
