§ Mrs. EwingTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he has for extending long-term development packages to(a) the countries of the former Soviet Union and (b) other low income countries.
§ Mr. BaldryAlthough the majority of countries of the former Soviet Union are not classified as low-income, they need technical assistance to further their transition to democracy and market economies alongside the resources available from the private sector, the international financial institutions and the European Union. We will continue to provide such assistance through our much respected know-how fund. Concurrently, we will continue to provide substantial long-term development assistance to low-income countries.
