To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage which quangos his Department has abolished since 1979.

My Department, which was established in April 1992, has not yet abolished any public bodies.

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage how many quangos his Department was responsible for(a) on 1992 and (b) in the latest year for which a number is available.

§ Mr. Dorrell
My Department was established in 1992 and took on responsibility for 53 non-departmental public bodies and four public corporations. Channel 4 became a public corporation on 1 January 1993 and the Millennium Commission was created earlier this year. The Department is therefore now responsible for 54 NDPBs and five public corporations.
