HL Deb 26 May 1994 vol 555 c50WA
The Countess of Mar

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What inter-departmental arrangements have been made for the implementation of United Kingdom obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention; and

By what means will the national authority that is to be established by the United Kingdom under the Chemical Weapons Convention be accountable to Parliament.

Lord Strathclyde

The national authority to be established in the United Kingdom under the terms of the Chemical Weapons Convention will be located in the Department of Trade and Industry. DTI Ministers will be accountable to Parliament in the normal manner for the activities of the national authority.

This department liaises closely with those other government departments which may have an interest in the implementation of the convention, both directly and through the appropriate inter-departmental committees.
