HC Deb 12 May 1994 vol 243 c194W
Mr. Blair

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many weapons were voluntarily surrendered to the police in each year since 1979.

Mr. Charles Wardle

No central record is kept of the numbers of weapons surrendered to the police. The available information is that the national firearms amnesty held in 1988 resulted in over 47,000 guns being handed in. Local operations by seven police forces in Great Britain resulted in the surrender of 7,494 bladed weapons in the three years from April 1990 to March 1993.
