17. Mr. Steen

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated loss of duty from alcoholic beverage sales in the United Kingdom for 1993–94 and for 1994–95 as a result of cross-border shopping in the single market.

Sir John Cope

Information on which to base an estimate is available only for the calendar year 1993. Customs and Excise estimate the loss of duty from additional cross-border alcohol sales as £70 million.
