HC Deb 31 March 1994 vol 240 c917W
Sir John Stanley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what has been the change in households in the private rented sector; and what percentage of households have been in private rented accommodation in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

Sir George Young

Estimated numbers and percentages of households in private rented accommodation in England are as follows:

number percentages
1989 1,610,000 8.6
1990 1,690,000 8.9
1991 1,760,000 9.3
1992 1,790,000 9.2
1993 1,950,000 9.9

These figures are from labour force surveys and are subject to sampling error. They nevertheless provide a good indication of the trend over this period in privately renting households.
