HL Deb 30 March 1994 vol 553 cc53-4WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the annual cost of immigration detention; and whether they can isolate the costs of detention for (a) all those who have committed no offences in the United Kingdom and (b) asylum seekers.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers)

The total cost to the Immigration Service of running its detention accommodation in the financial year 1992–93 was £4,570,221. It is not possible to separate from this total the costs which relate to detainees who had committed no offences in the United Kingdom or who had sought asylum.

Information about the costs of immigration detention in police cells and in Prison Service establishments is not held centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
