HL Deb 30 March 1994 vol 553 c61WA
Lord Williams of Elvel

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are satisfied that the advertisements by the Huntingdonshire District Council to support its case in the Local Government Review Procedure are (a) a proper use of council tax-payers funds and (b) truthful.

The Earl of Arran

We cannot comment on individual pieces of publicity material, but the general position is clear. The Department of the Environment published in 1988 a code of recommended practice on local authority publicity. The code states that local authorities should not use public funds to mount campaigns to persuade the public to hold a particular view on a question of policy.
