HC Deb 23 March 1994 vol 240 c251W
Mr. Devlin

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what action he is taking to keep shipping with hazardous cargoes away from areas of environmental sensitivity.

Mr. Norris

Measures are in place to keep ships carrying hazardous cargoes away from environmentally sensitive areas. These include "areas to be avoided" off the islands of Orkney and Shetland, around Fair Isle, and between the Smalls lighthouse and Grossholme island. In addition, there is a defined deep water route to the west of the Hebrides. Further measures to protect the coast will take account of any recommendations made by the inquiry announced to the House by the Secretary of State on 11 January 1993 under the chairmanship of Lord Donaldson of Lymington.
