§ Mr. Alex CarlileTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) how many schools in Powys were successful in receiving grant aid under the technology schools initiative; and if he will make a statement;
(2) if he will set out the criteria for provision of receiving grant aid under the technology schools initiative for (a) grant-maintained school and (b) other schools; and if he will make a statement;
(3) if he will list the schools which have secured grant aid under the technology schools initiative and the amount of grant in each case; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. RedwoodThe criteria are set out in a Welsh Office circular letter dated 21 May 1993 which was sent to all directors of education and chairpersons of grant-maintained schools in Wales. A copy of the letter has been placed in the Library of the House.
The criteria apply to both grant-maintained and other schools. However, grant-maintained school strategies are funded by capital grant and LEA maintained schools by local authority capital credit approvals.
On this occasion, none of the successful schools was located in Powys. Strategies have been approved for the following schools for the amounts shown:
£ Bedwas comprehensive school 250,000 Bishop Vaughan grant-maintained school 245,000 Cynffig comprehensive school 223,000 Morriston comprehensive school 210,000 Queen Elizabeth Maridunum school 244,000 Risca comprehensive school 245,000 Ysgol David Hughes 237,000 Ysgol Morgan Llwyd 239,000 In addition, £212,000 was approved for Denbigh technological and vocational education centre.
The technology schools initiative represents a considerable investment in improving technology teaching in the schools which submitted successful proposals. My Department is considering how best to build on the success of this initiative. This will include, in due -course, a review of the criteria for receiving support under the initiative.
