HC Deb 22 June 1994 vol 245 c193W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) how many representations he has received on the proposed re-introduction of compulsory sheep dipping; and if he will make a statement;

(2) how many representations he has received during the last 12 months on the subject of sheep scab; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Redwood

I have received numerous representations. Sheep scab is a disease which can be controlled by individual farmers, who are aware of the preventive measures and procedures needed to deal with it. The Government have no plans to reintroduce controls. The Government propose to carry out a publicity campaign during the autumn to encourage farmers to treat their sheep. We shall be stepping up our efforts to ensure that unfit animals are not presented for sale by increasing the official veterinary presence at markets.
