HL Deb 16 June 1994 vol 555 c108WA
Lord Rea

asked Her Majesty's Government:

To list, for each year since 1981, how long it has taken the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals to translate the annual pay award for clinical staff in line with the pay awards for their NHS counterparts; and

(a) what representations they have received from the British Medical Association's Medical Academic Staff Committee about parity of pay between clinical academic staff and their NHS counterparts, and (b) what steps they are taking to ensure the automatic translation of the Doctors' and Dentists' Review Body pay award to clinical academic staff.

The Minister of State, Department for Education (Baroness Blatch)

The historical information request-ed by the noble Lord is a matter for the new Universities and Colleges Employers' Association (UCEA), not for the Government. The UCEA replaced the Salaries and Industrial Relations Division of the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals (CVCP) from 1 April 1994.

The negotiations of pay awards for clinical'academic staff is also a matter for the university employers.

The Government have recently replied to letters from Sir Herbert Duthie, Chairman of the Clinical Academic Staff Salaries Committee of the CVCP, and Colin Smith, Chairman of the Medical Academic Staff Committee of the British Medical Association (BMA), on that basis.
