HL Deb 25 July 1994 vol 557 c66WA
The Earl of Ilchester

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, following the closure of RAF Biggin Hill, the sale of the Officers' Mess and the memorial swimming pool was subject to any conditions regulating its future use or development; and whether they are satisfied that any future use of the above buildings will fully take into account their proximity to the Royal Air Force Memorial Chapel and the historical importance of the site.

Lord Henley

No conditions were imposed when the former Officers' Mess, and its grounds were sold by public auction in February, since we took the view that the planning process would ensure sympathetic development of the site. The recent Grade 2 listing of the Mess building strengthens the local planning authority's control of development. The Memorial Chapel is separated from the Mess by a public road, and should not be adversely affected by development.
