HC Deb 19 July 1994 vol 247 c146W
Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will request the Curriculum Council for Wales to(a) undertake research into the current provision of road safety education in schools, (b) identify examples of good practice and (c) recommend how such good practice might be extended.

Sir Wyn Roberts

No. Neither my right hon. Friend nor I have plans to invite the Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales to conduct such research.

Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will consider including training of teachers in road safety education as a national priority area in grants for education support and training.

Sir Wyn Roberts

Details of the Welsh Office's 1995–96 grants for education support and training—GEST —programme were sent to local education authorities in June this year. Training in road safety education is not included in the programme which has been the subject of extensive consultations with LEAs. The Department will, in due course, consult LEAs on the priorities to be supported in the 1996–97 GEST programme and will consider any proposals for funding, including any relating to road safety education, as part of that exercise.
